Electric Scooter Insurance

Insurance for Electric Scooters – The way we move around has changed a lot, especially in big cities. Therefore, it is not surprising that a very recurrent search on the internet is related to electric scooter insurance in Madrid or Barcelona, among other cities.

Nowadays, the electric scooter has become a means of transport chosen by many people, regardless of their age, to travel to their places of study, work, or even to go shopping or meet friends. This may be due, among other reasons, to its economy, as it does not require refueling, the lower initial investment compared to other means of transport, the convenience of parking and storing it anywhere, as well as the environmental benefits it represents.

For this reason, the world of insurance has also had to make room for our new way of getting around by including electric scooters with coverage ranging from Civil Liability to much more specific insurance with coverage for the scooter itself and the damage it may suffer as a result of an accident.

If you are thinking of joining this wave of more sustainable journeys, here you will find everything you need to know about electric scooters.

What does insurance cover for an electric scooter?

The electric scooter insurance covers the scooter’s own damages, such as accidental bumps or falls, but there are also alternatives that offer a solution for the purposes of Civil Liability, which are the damages that we can cause to a third party or their property. For example, if a person is run over or a parked car is hit, the costs of compensation or repair will be borne by the scooter driver unless he or she has this Civil Liability cover.

In the same way, if the scooter is damaged but there is no insurance for the damage, all repair or loss costs will not be covered by any insurance company and will be additional costs for the user.

Is insurance mandatory for electric scooters?

Scooter insurance is not currently part of the list of compulsory insurance in our country, although it is highly recommended as a measure of personal protection and for third parties, and any vehicle or device that serves to circulate should have insurance. No one can guarantee that we will not suffer an accident, even a minor one, so it is best to be insured.

At the moment, it is only compulsory to have insurance in Benidorm, Alicante, and Barcelona for Civil Liability or what we know as third-party insurance. In addition, if you have home insurance, you can check what kind of coverage you have in case of an accident to see if you would be covered in that situation.

How much does an electric scooter insurance cost?

The price of insurance for this type of vehicle usually ranges from 25 to 55 euros per year, depending on the coverage and the model of scooter, although it is true that we think of prices for liability coverage and the like, not a complete protection of the object itself as you can get when buying the electric scooter.

What is an electric scooter?

It is a self-propelled scooter thanks to an electric motor that allows it to cover short distances quickly, and the energy of the motor is supplied by a battery that is charged by connecting it to the mains. There are electric scooters of all types (with seats, with one wheel, and up to 4 wheels, even without handlebars).

How fast can an electric scooter go?

Although the DGT considers that the maximum speed for electric scooters should be limited to 25 km/h, there are different types of scooters on the market, some of which can reach 45 km/h and exceed 500 W of power. For this reason, the companies that market this type of product limit the maximum speed that these more powerful vehicles can reach.

You can find some models that even offer more power, reaching 1000 W, which could reach 45 km/h, and 1200 W, which could reach even 60 km/h.

Although these scooters have more power, their speed is still limited to 25 km/h, so this improvement will actually be useful to climb hills and alleviate the weight limitation of the driver of the vehicles.

Where they can drive?

If you are a scooter driver, you will know that you are not allowed to ride on pavement or pedestrian areas. Scooters must ride in the bicycle lane or on the road and always respect traffic lights. They are also not allowed on interurban roads, crossings, motorways, or dual carriageways. Electric scooters are also not allowed in urban tunnels.

Is it compulsory to wear a helmet on an electric scooter?

According to the new DGT regulations, if you ride an electric scooter, it is mandatory to wear a helmet. Failure to wear a helmet will result in a fine of 200 euros and the immobilization of the vehicle.

In addition to this, there are other punishable offenses when riding an electric scooter:

  • Use of a mobile phone or headphones, with a fine of up to 200 euros.
  • Driving on pavements or pedestrian areas, with a fine of up to 100 euros.
  • Carrying passengers, with a fine of up to 100 euros.
  • Driving at night without proper lighting or reflective clothing, with a fine of up to 200 euros.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with a fine of up to 200 euros and immobilization of the vehicle.

Electric scooter accident, is it covered by insurance?

Special attention must be paid to the province in which the scooter is driven because there are places, as we have seen, where it is compulsory to have Civil Liability insurance for electric scooters. If the driver has specific insurance for scooters, this will cover the necessary compensation for him or herself or for third parties injured in the event of an accident.
